It's Friday, I'm a Judge! Traditional Collectability #5

Welcome back to the Friday judging clinic! It's time for another traditional scale collectability class

As always, my personal judging history and credentials can be found on my About Me page.

This week, I'm doing something I've frequently done for the mini collectability classes, but haven't yet done for the traditional scale classes. That's right, we're looking at a hypothetical double judged class today! All three of these entries could be found in a Quarter Horse class at a show. If you've been following the series as a whole, you'll know this means you can have wildly different run types in a class double judged for collectability - everything from OOAKs and prize models to regular runs.
Horse A: Glossy ATP Power - 2023 BreyerFest Prize Model - 50 made
Horse B: Seven Arts Surprise - 2021 BreyerFest Special Run - Gambler's Choice glossy flaxen chestnut roan - 325 made
Horse C: Wimpy's Little Step - 2024 Spokes and Spurs Event Model - 200 made - missing belly stamp

Take a moment, think about how you'd place this class. When you're ready, my placings can be found under the jump. ↓

The Placings:

🥇1st: Horse A - Glossy ATP Power

I pinned the glossy ATP Power first. It was one of those cases where numbers won out for me. As far as I can tell, the desirability for glossy ATP Power and Wimpy are about the same - glossy ATP Power has the misfortune of being a flat black, so the gloss doesn't add dimension to his color the way it does for other colors. Wyatt is also a less popular mold. So with desirability about the same, the lower number won out for me.

🥈2nd: Horse C - Wimpy's Little Step

In second, I pinned the Wimpy's Little Step. I did go back and forth between the ATP Power and the Wimpy. On one hand, yes, the glossy ATP Power is a prize model, but he's not a super desirable one. On the other hand, the Bobby Jo mold is popular, event models are very desirable, and Wimpy is very well-shaded. The missing belly stamp on the Wimpy is cool, and could give him a slight edge over other Wimpys in a class, but it doesn't factor in here.

🥉3rd: Horse B - Seven Arts Surprise

The third place pin in this class is the Seven Arts Surprise and it's the easy choice. Numbers wise, he's the highest at 325. But even past numbers, a surprise model is less desirable than an event model or prize model. Additionally, the flaxen chestnut roan is the least desired color from that run. He has lovely color and shading, but it's not enough to place him over rarer and more desirable models.

How did you place this class? What made you pick one horse over another?

  1. I waffled between A and C for the same reasons you mentioned, but ultimately placed them the same way you did. This was fun!
