It's Friday, I'm a Judge! Mini Collectability #4

We're at the top of our fourth cycle of the Friday judging clinic, which means we're back to my favorite topic - mini collectability!

As always, my personal judging history and credentials can be found on my About Me page.

This week, I'm doing something a little different in our mini collectability class. Previously, I've presented mini collectability classes that would be double judged for breed, rather than similar run types. For our class this week, we're switching it up! All of the horses in this class are Stablemates from the various Clubs Breyer has. I've picked one from each - the Stablemates Club, the Premier Club, and the Deluxe Collector Club.
Horse A: Virkie - Stablemates Club Gambler's Choice - 2023 - Unknown amount made
Horse B: Corazon - Premier Club Bonus Stablemate - 2015 - ~750 made
Horse C: Fandango - Deluxe Collector Club Stablemate - 2023 - Unknown amount made

Think about collectability - what horse is the rarest? Which is in the nicest condition? Which horse is most desired by the hobby at large? When you're ready, my placings can be found under the jump.

The Placings:

🥇1st: Horse B - Corazon

In first place, we have Corazon. Not only is he the horse with a solid run number, but he's also the oldest of the three models. The difference in the scale of the hobby from 2015 to 2023 is astronomical. The hobby really started growing during the pandemic, and I think just statistically we can assume there are more of both Virkie and Fandango than Corazon. Corazon was also released in a set with Hermoso on the Eberl Andalusian Stablemate mold, which adds a element of difficulty in finding one - a lot of people do not like to split up sets (I'm one of these people). For his age, rarity, and desirability, Corazon is an easy pin for first.

🥈2nd: Horse A - Virkie

Virkie is the second place pin for me. While he was released in the same year as Fandango, he is the more desirable release by the nature of his release. Virkie is a Gambler's Choice, so by the numbers there are going to be fewer made per color than the other Club releases of that year. The Appaloosa is not the most popular of the four colors released (that honor belongs to the rainbow decorator), he's still a well-designed color on a well-liked mold. The recency of his release puts him under Corazon, as he's a little easier to find at the moment (and the G2 Shetland is not quite as popular as the G3 Standing Foal), but he's clearly more rare than Fandango.

🥉3rd: Horse C - Fandango

Fandango is the easy pin here in third. While we don't have set numbers on him, we know of the three he's going to have the most made. Corazon has his run numbers released, and Virkie was the Stablemates Club Gamblers, so his total run number is split across four models. Fandango was readily available to everyone who joined the Deluxe Collector Club. Because of this, and the recency of his release, just about everyone who wanted one could get one. He's notable for being the first realistic release on the Twist mold since the initial release in the Stablemates Club, but this isn't enough to make him competitive against Corazon or Virkie.

How did you place the class? Why did you place the class the way you did? Do you agree with my placings?

  1. My line of reasoning as well, though I didn't say to myself that Virkie was a gambler's choice, therefore divided between 4 colors and likely fewer than the Fandango. Condition seemed to be equal across the board so it was not a factor.
